Background Robin Sharma is an American "Leadership Expert" who spends his time lecturing and hosting workshops about how to become a better leader. This is a free 1 hour audiobook around that topic (available from audible). Review This felt like it was created purely to advertise Robin Sharma and his courses, lectures, podcasts etc. Very heavy on celebrity namedrops of people he has helped and non-sensical cheesy stories to illustrate his points which can pretty much be summed up as follows: 1) Be the best version of yourself you can be. 2) Be kind to others. 3) Lead by example. 4) Please go on a course by Robin Sharma. He is clearly very successful but not my style. Should you read/listen to this? Not unless you are a very big fan of artificial American cheese.

If you have seen my previous posts you can hopefully see by now that I take great pride in my verbal and written explanations to patients. However it came to my attention very recently that one area this was falling short of the high expectations I set for myself was during exams when discussing all the normal findings. Until just a few weeks ago I tended to keep this to a minimum and just focus on the problems I had found. But I now realise this is a significant oversight. By explaining each stage of your assessment either as you do it or just after sitting the patient up you are highlighting all the things you have just checked, reaffirming how thorough you are and giving the patient the opportunity to comment on each point if they wish.
So now my explanation with patients goes something like this:
After that you make sure the patient understood all that and check to see if they have any questions before going on to give great OHI hopefully using both an OHI postcard and a custom demo model 😉. This process doesn't take long and you should easily have time for it if there are no issues to report but it should hopefully minimise the problem that I know some dentists encounter when patients feel short changed because their exam was only 10 minutes long and the dentist barely talked to them. And it also really helps if there is lots to talk about because you will be used to approaching each topic in a systematic way therefore making it easier to ensure no points are missed. If you are already doing something similar I would love to hear about it. If not then I would suggest you give it a try for yourself. This year I am determined to read more books both in the realm of fiction and non-fiction and whenever I read anything that I think would be relevant to other dentists I thought I would talk about it here. Unfortunately I often struggle to find time to read however I have recently discovered audiobooks which means that I can make better use of my time driving to and from work (I spend at least 6-7 hours a week commuting). I am getting these books from various platforms such as Amazon's Audible app and my local library audiobook rental service.
So the first of these reviews is one such audiobook, namely the audiobook version of the Ask Gary Vee book which I have listened to over the past 2 weeks. Background Gary Vaynerchuk is an American entrepreneur who started in the business world building up his family wine wholesale business and then recently has created one of the fastest growing social media and advertising businesses in the US. He spends a lot of time doing public speaking and has a business Q&A youtube channel and this book is a collection of some of those questions. Quick review This audiobook was truly inspirational to me. Gary's confidence and positivity is remarkably infectious and it was listening to Gary's advice that gave me to positive push to actually create this website. There were so many points that were lightbulb moments for me. I would strongly urge anybody interested in promoting themselves or their business to read/listen to this. Specific learning points relating to dentistry This book is not in any way targeted at dentists but it is full of useful info that could potentially help them. The main topics of interest include: Controlling your online presence and therefore what information about you is in the public domain. The potential ways individuals or businesses can benefit from online advertising. How the various social networks vary and how they should be treated differently to get best results. How to get the best work/life balance Management advice But the biggest benefit is the incredibly motivational feel to this whole book. I would be surprised if anybody can read/listen to this without taking away a more positive attitude to some part of their life or work. The power of free stuff is huge. Whether it is free things that companies are giving to you as a provider so that you will consider buying their products or free things that you can pass on to patients for them to try.
