I don't like wearing a mask. They are a faff, feel hot, cause my loupes to fog up, and research shows they are pretty much useless with cross-infection. But I do want to minimise splatter so I like visors. The difficulty is that visors don't normally fit on most loupes well. My loupes can come with little Velcro tabs for this purpose but I have found that Velcro attachments aren't great because they don't allow the visor to lift up so when the loupes are resting on your chest via the neck strap it causes the visor to ping off. So here is how I modified my loupes to overcome all these issues. You need some crocodile clips, a great source of these are in bib chains, specifically the ones from premium plus. You will then also need some cable ties. All the other bits in the photo are optional extras. Cut the crocodile clip off the bib chain and use the cable ties to attach it to the outside of the arm of your loupes. In my case it goes over the bit where my name is. Use a hole punch to create holes in your visor at an appropriate level so that the clips hold onto the visor covering your face. You can leave it at that, but personally I like to take a couple of minutes to do 2 further modifications. Firstly I add these little eyelets as the crocodile clips hold onto them even better and it makes the visor move up and down more easily. The second modification I make is to add some electrical tape to the top edge of the visor. The reason I do this is that some visors are a little sharp and I have given myself a few little cuts on my hands before. So much for them being a "safety visor"! The tape prevents this.
Do you ever find yourself in awe of dentists that seem like they can achieve so much? They seem to have it all and can do it all. They do a high volume of amazing dentistry which is documented to a very high standard. They also have other commitments such as mentoring and teaching possibly even internationally. They somehow have time to read and review research articles and they also have hobbies outside of dentistry and a full family life. I think a small number of people are in fact superhuman, everyone else (myself included) will have to make do with being mortal and the best we can hope for is training ourselves to become productivity ninjas. If you would like to learn how to become better at achieving more then this book really could help. It has definitely helped me.
