A few months ago I wrote about finding your "why" as recommended by Simon Sinek. Then that lead on to creating my golden circle. This helps me to reflect on all opportunities that come my way so that I can decide if they are really worth pursuing and if my skillset is likely to work well for that particular task. To ensure that I reflect upon this regularly I have adopted an idea recommended in the fantastic book Peak Performance (http://www.drchrisharper.co.uk/blog/book-review-peak-performance) about putting your purpose statement in places you will see regularly, particularly in places where you may face tough challenges. So I have put my golden circle in 3 places: on the background of my iPad, on the wall in my surgery, and on the inside of my locker when I am in Exeter teaching dental students.
Even the quick, subconscious glance at these should help me to remember why I do what I do and keep me striving for excellence. If you have created a purpose statement I would love to know where you keep yours so that you consider it regularly.
