I have recently reviewed and updated my antibiotic prescribing protocol so I thought I would share it here.
I created a protocol for prescribing antibiotics about 5 years ago because we didn't have one in the practice and an audit suggested we were often prescribing them unnecessarily at the time. Since then there has been a lot more in the press about making sure we are only prescribing antibiotics appropriately to minimise the impact of potential adverse reactions and the long term concerns over AB resistance. If you are using a protocol like this rather than reaching for your BNF then you need to review it regularly to ensure the information is correct. I believe the information in mine does reflect all the relevant advice in the BNF but if you happen to find anything out of place please feel free to contact me so that I can amend it. If you wish to download mine rather than write out your own, it can be found via my google drive: http://www.drchrisharper.co.uk/useful-resources.html
